Basilica Minore "dela Nuestra Seniora de Immaculada Concepcion"
Commonly referred to as the Malolos Cathedral, this edifice located at the heart of the city is the ecclesiastical seat of the Diocese of Malolos in the Philippines.
Parading a grandiose facade, this Neo-classical structure was not as magnificent as it is today. During the late 1500s, Malolos was Christianized by the Augustinians leading to the establishment of the Parish Church of the Immaculate Concepcion. Built in 1591 using light materials, it was reconstructed in the succeeding years adding refurbishments from time to time.
Also known as Palacio Presidential, General Emilio Aguinaldo held his office in this convent from September 10,1898 to March 29,1899, during the creation of the Malolos Congress up to the declaration of the First Philippine Republic.
Unfortunately, when the Philippine-American war broke out, he had to move to Pampanga and instructed General Antonio Luna to burn the church, leaving it useless should it fall to American hands.
The Malolos Church was then rebuilt and became the Cathedral with the installation of its first diocesan bishop, Most Reverend Manuel del Rosario D.D., on March 1962. Restoration took place until it was elevated into the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Concepcion on December 4,1999 under the tenure of Bishop Rolando Tria-Tirona, D.D. Most Reverend Jose F. Oliveros, D.D, the forth and current bishop of Malolos continues to make improvements such as the construction of statues under the Kalayaan Tree and the memorial cross fronting the Basilica.
